Role of pets: goes beyond great Dane

New GLOUCESTER, can be difficult to find a home for the average pooch ill-treated, abandoned or neglected.

For dogs that grow with the size of small horses, sometimes suffer from serious health problems and may have problems of behaviour out of control? It has been beyond great Dane rescue.

"We try to focus on the most sick," Group President Stephanie Cattabriga, said. "Who else wants".

As Lady of 3 years of age, who has a condition that causes debilitating formations of calcium around their joints and Hannah 5 years of age, who became overweight, suffering from arthritis and so afraid of humans and other animals that are cowered and barked when they came near her.

Beyond taking 10 to 12 great Dane a year, rehabilitation, training and search for new homes to one of the world's largest dog breeds. Dogs come from a length of of the Northeast, often owners who cannot afford the medical needs of your dog, cannot handle behavior problems or can not deal with the care and feeding of an animal that can weigh anywhere between 100 and 200 pounds.

Cattabriga helped found the group in 2007 after the dissolution only another great Dane rescue of Maine. This group had existed for more than one dozen years, and his operation fell largely to a woman.

Based in Lewiston, the non-profit beyond has some 10 volunteers who serve as including foster homes. Cattabriga herself is promoting to Hannah, a dog Puppy Mill whose skittishness led her to try to bite a baby in his old House. Hannah was also treated harshly by the previous owners, which is a problem for sensitive dogs as a great Dane.

"For big dogs, are babies fair," said Carol Grover, who serves as beyond the Vice President and has fostered great Dane for the group. She and her husband had been passed to Lady last year.

Beyond Hannah in medicines for arthritis and gave him a complete diet. Cattabriga took Hannah to Vermont for a three-hour evaluation by a veterinary behaviorist, and she and her husband have worked with Hannah in their behaviour in the past three months.

It is the type of treatment that the rescue provides all their dogs. Some, such as Lady, also need surgery, acupuncture, chiropractic care and various treatments to overcome physical problems. The rescue pays for, also, until that dog is adopted. Beyond spends an average of $1,000 per dog for medical care only, all donations.

For dogs that care is worthwhile. Recently Hannah allowed his nails cut, something she used to fight so vehemently that their former owners brought her to the vet for the procedure, gagged. And spent an hour around a small group of strangers and other great Dane without barking or trying to hide. It is improving the behavior that will help her land in a foster home at some point, although she will still have to go to a family with children and other dogs.

"I'll be a difficult start to find," said Cattabriga. "It will be to rescue long."

In contrast to an animal shelter, beyond has no building of its own and no kennel. The rescue is concerned about five or six great Dane at a time in foster care. Looks the same in potential adoptive homes than what is in their homes: experience, kindness, and the ability to take on a very large but very sensitive and loyal animal.

More than volunteers say great Danes are unusual for something more than its size.

"There is a different link," said Grover as Lady supported it. "It's special."

If your child is asking for a pet and is about to give up, there are many things to take into account before making a pet.

Then what kind of pet is appropriate for your family?

CAT toilet training kit makes evils of the sand box go bye-bye

Kristine Hansen, contributing writer, Monday, July 18, 2011, 7: 13 am EDT

The days of smelly garbage boxes could be coming to an end.

Seven years ago, rescue Rebecca, 32, assembling a kit that helps to train cats to use the toilet called CitiKitty. Now your company - which has made $700,000 in sales, and so far - is projected at $ 1 million in revenue by yearend.

Talk of a royal flush.

This week, rescue will appear in the program of ABC "shark tank" for the second time.

The program, produced by Mark Burnett, known for "survivor" and "The apprentice" has entrepreneurs trying to persuade five wealthy businessmen, called "sharks" to invest in their business.

During his appearance on May 13, Kevin Harington invested $100,000 in CitiKitty for a return of 20% of the shares. But the publicity caused its sales to spike - bringing in $350,000 that same month. Demand forced recruitment of six temporary workers, part-time with orders rescue.

CitiKitty, which sells for $24.98 helps transition from litter box cats. The product - which consists of a series of trays - is full of garbage and inserted under the toilet seat and at the mouth of the convenient. The first tray is solid; but follow-up trays have holes of increasing size in the center of them, which means the tray and disappears from the litter over time. In the end, the cat is using the toilet without a basket or garbage.

Most people were introduced to a cat with WC in "Meet the parents," the 2000 comedy starring Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller. In this film, the character of Niro owned a cat of the Himalayas called "Mr. ash" that squats in the toilet and relieves himself.

The image was surprising but intriguing to many owners of cat litter box cleaning.

"Cats are the animal companion number one and that there is a big market", said Jason Merithew, a spokesman at the American Hospital Association in animals, who admits that he believes about springing for a toilet-training kits for your cat, especially to avoid cleaning the litter box.

"Pet-health perspective is very important to clean the litter box daily." "If it is a dirty litter box, it could cause some problems where the cat can not go there and start to relieve themselves elsewhere."

A toasted bread from the trash

To share a small apartment in Manhattan with her husband, rescue had the idea of CitiKitty.

"As soon as you have enough space for your winter jacket, and much less a box of sand," said the rescue. So she got rid of his box of sand, filled with a pan roasted cat litter and was placed inside its toilet. Soon, Samantha, her 11 year old cat, was jumping into the bathroom to do their business.

"I knew from the outset that Samantha tinkled that millions of people who want to do this," he said.

Two similar products - one costs $100 and the other lacked clear instructions - left plenty of room for adaptation, said. Videos about procedures are published on CitiKitty.com.

He always enjoyed rescue, who studied business and graphic design at the University before working in a software development, product design company. While his high school classmates read novels on the beach, rescue had stuck her nose in books about corporate branding.

10 Entrepreneurs Next generation to see

Even so, wasn't easy transition to being an entrepreneur. "No I launched a product before and felt that he had much to learn," said the rescue. "I was very fortunate in having one of the head-turning, 'wow' factors".

After quelling the $20,000 of his own money - mainly used for web design and graphic design while his family loaned warehouse space: CitiKitty was profitable within 30 days with low overhead. This summer moved the business from his home north of Philadelphia. She also hired its first employee last fall. He chose a company close to the House to monitor the process.

"The last thing you want is to make this great execution in China, signing him, and when it gets here in a container is wrong," said ransom. "My manufacturer is located 30 minutes from me, and everything that is going on I know."

Will soon sell the kit at select Walgreens retail outlets; It is now available through CitiKitty.com, Walmart, close to 200 stores of pets nationwide and several markets dedicated to pet products online.

She did not stop there. In "meet the parents", Mr. Jinx didn't know how to empty. And rescue - always in search of other business opportunities - happened a complementary product to its toilet-training kit to solve this problem: a BALDEADORA automatic toilet activated by a sensor movement ($189).

She recently left a line of candies for cat: striped tuna tuna flakes fished in Asia.

"I've never seen a cat go crazy as a pleasure," said.

TORONTO summer camp season is here and though many boys were sent field nothing, trips, canoe and roasted marshmallow, a small group of children at a Toronto animal shelter is experiencing a practical education in training man's best friend.

For Justine Bystram, a decade in the Pawsitively training program pet dog junior camp children, the more difficult in the first morning of the camp is getting to Zoe, a well fed pug, to do what coach Margaret Pender called "pushup doggie".

Pender, Center of dead standing in a small courtyard behind the Toronto Humane Society shelter at the eastern edge of the city, repeats itself so it can listen to all 11 children and dogs in five homes.

"Sit, sit, down, down, stand."

Zoe white hair, the dog's age one group antique, plops and stays there, despite the request of Justine and fellow classmate Jez Vanrooy, 11.

"She only do one," admitted Justine.

The dog training session is the most recent program offered by Pawsitively pets, a company began three years ago in a small hospital in Toronto that animal is with camps in southern Ontario, Ottawa and Delta, b.c., teaching hundreds of children in summer classes.

It offers camps weeks sessions, mainly outside school year, giving to children aged five to 15 lessons on animal medicine and training. There is even an camp giving the opportunity to touch the creatures over 40 young children.

Me, find homes for unwanted dogs, says the camps increase children's knowledge of animals and exotic Founder Jennifer Ego, director of K9 rescue, snakes, reptiles and crawly bugs - and hammers that owning a pet is a big commitment.

Knowledge acquired in the camps can help children decide whether spending her life working with animals is suitable for them.

"I think it gives a good chance, instead of going to a general camps or sports field which perhaps exceeding in their years more children". "These camps give children the opportunity to do something really take much of."

Some aspiring veterinarians are among the Group of Toronto refuge camp attendees.

One is Meghan Bowman, who attended Camp mini-veterinarian of the Group last year. She is back this year to help the animals at the shelter and some suggestions on your Yorkshire terrier's 11 weeks of age, pipe of training.

15 Years is sure that wants to be a veterinarian after launch shelters and a veterinary clinic.

"I love animals and I really want to help them," said Meghan.

The camp also provides access to the world of pet care that most children do not have the opportunity to see, since many shelters and clinics do not take volunteers under the age of 18 years, says the Ego.

Bobbi Venier, it was the wild rabbits in the suburb of Vancouver Delta inspired to take Pawsitively pets to British Columbia.

Venier, a friend of Ego, said that it all started when someone leaves your bunnies go free resulting in a significant population of wild rabbits.

Hopes that the guys at his camp of not make similar mistakes with their pets.

The camp has a range of ages and gives children a guide to the animals in the province, from the very common bunnies for dogs, raccoons, and other urban wildlife.

Like me, said she expected many participants of the camp are intended for careers in animal medicine.

"Many of them want to be veterinary, know this." "(Still) are, like seven years of age".

She said she was "amazed" by the knowledge of animals for the children, as a young girl who taught Venier that owls cannot move their eyes.

"At the end of the summer we all know a lot, the children and adults."
