Guide Dogs of Texas, the only guide dog training school in Texas, is looking for volunteers to care for dogs in its breeding program.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to enjoy the companionship of one of these well-trained dogs and even participate in welcoming a litter of puppies into the world.
There are several volunteer opportunities in the breeding program. Brood/stud holders are needed to adopt a dog for the breeding program and to provide a permanent home for the dog, as well as assist in whelping, and have up to eight weeks with puppies.
Brood/stud sitters care for dogs in the breeding program while the holder is out of town. Whelping assistants assist in delivering the puppies. They must be on call around the clock, but the length of commitment is limited.
The puppy development assistant will assist the brood holder with puppies from birth to 8 weeks old. The length of commitment is flexible and dependent on the brood holder.
Other volunteer opportunities include puppy raisers, boarders for dogs on weekends, provide meals for clients in training, help in the kennel, and assist with special events.
"GDTX volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. Without them, we just would not have the caliber of organization we have today," said Susana Dias , volunteer coordinator, in a news release.
"We provide the very best quality guide dogs for visually impaired Texans because our volunteers are selfless and committed to quality. They are amazing ambassadors in our communities and spread the joy by telling everyone they meet what a difference that guide dogs can make. Guide Dogs of Texas volunteers change lives."
Volunteers for brood/stud holders must meet the following qualifications if they would like to participate in this opportunity: Live within one hour or reasonable distance from San Antonio; have a fenced yard; provide transportation to and from veterinary clinics or other GDTX events; be able to keep a stud or brood dog company throughout the day and not leave it alone for more than four hours straight; have the ability to provide a safe environment when the brood is in heat; and provide the stud or brood with daily exercise.
Also, no intact male dogs are allowed in the home. GDTX provides training in dog handling, care, obedience and whelping.
Guide Dogs of Texas conducts free tours of their training facility every first Thursday and every third Tuesday of the month. This is a unique opportunity to have questions answered as you get a personal tour of the training facility. It is a chance to learn how GDTX impacts and changes lives.
Guide Dogs of Texas utilizes a meticulous matching process of client and guide dog, one-to-one customized training, and a lifelong after-care program to provide quality guide dogs to visually impaired Texans.
Vertifi Software announced last week that it has launched a mobile banking application (app) designed specifically for Apple's iPad tablet computer.
The first credit union to deploy the app is $4.3 billion Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union (RBFCU).
Features include access to account balances and transaction history, transfers and loan payment capabilities, access to archived check images, a secure messaging system, branch/ATM locator, access to loan and deposit rates, advanced promotional capabilities to deliver targeted messaging to members, and an optimized layout to take full advantage of the iPad's 9.7-inch display.
This app also has a unique use of the camera in the newly-released iPad 2 for enabling mobile remote check deposits. The application makes use of the device's built-in camera to acquire check images, and image pre-processing and validation takes place on-device for enhanced performance.
Checks are processed electronically end-to-end through Vertifi, and deposits are posted to members' accounts in real time with immediate access to check images.
With this deployment, RBFCU now has downloadable apps that support the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Android devices.
